I miss hugging my friends.

Note: This interview is transcript-only, as requested by the interviewee.

[Interviewer]

How has Covid-19 impacted your daily life?

[Shawna]

Um, I’m no longer working because I’m a contractor for schools. So there’s a very good chance we won’t be allowed in come fall.

[Interviewer]

You’re a contractor so does that mean that you…

[Shawna]

We run school programs for gardening.

[Interviewer]

Ohh, got it.

What did you under-appreciate before Covid and what do you, like, really appreciate now?

[Shawna]

Um, I under-appreciated just the freedom of going outs- to like the movies or restaurants, or going shopping, things like that, But you know since you asked that question I've actually thought I miss hugging my friends! The most.

[Interviewer]

Being close like… you know.

[Shawna]

Yeah, you know we always say “hi” and “bye” and it’s odd not to… hug people.

[Interviewer]

Being sort of… touched by people.

[Shawna]

yeah, it’s really odd.

[Interviewer]

How did isolation affect you and how did it, like, affect your relationship with family and friends? Like I know we talked about being touched by people.

[Shawna]

well, most of my family lives elsewhere. Um a lot in Calgary and some in Saskatchewan and just not being able to travel and see them has been a hardship I think cause we are quite a close family and just not not being able to physically see them. So we’ve done a lot of zoom meetings and things like that.

[Interviewer]

So it’s kind of been hard to not be able to like, go over and really connect with people.

[Shawna]

Right.

[Interviewer]

What pre-Covid memory keeps you hopeful and what possible future keeps you going?

[Shawna]

Well, personally I can’t wait to hold my grandson again and give him a big kiss!

*laughing*

Um, I think… uh… we’re people, we’re very resilient and I think it will be ok. We’ll figure it out and in the meantime I think we just have to be patient and kind to each other and accepting of this new temporary… I’m not going to say the word normal.

*laughing*

[Interviewer]

It’s temporary!

[Shawna]

This new temporary situation we find ourselves in.
